I found it very amusing to see Lisa using a Mac in an episode of The Simpsons a few weeks back, not a brilliant episode but pretty amusing nonetheless. As it hasn’t got an Apple logo in sight, it’s interesting to think over whether it was an actual paid placement by Apple into the series or if it was just a tribute in some way. It may also be that the iMac is so synonymous with a typical desktop on television- It’s hard to find a fictional office in television that doesn’t feature one somewhere, Apple seem to take any opportunity to get their products into a show.
This is in no way a bad thing, you never see the iMac featured in any way apart from to have it framed somewhere in the shot on a desk. It’s probably also because they work so well in showing a high quality/priced computer but without having to show the branding in any detail. Any other high powered machine is likely to have a separate tower and monitor, which would be nigh-impossible to show off properly. The iMac has such an iconic design that it can be recognised immediately by only seeing on screen for a brief period. That in turn sticks in people’s mind, especially if they see the same machine across many different tv shows. Another great bit of easy marketing for Apple’s brand.
In other news, don’t you think Maggie went very evil in that specific episode of The Simpsons? It’s always been obvious that she’s certainly an intelligent kid, but as she’s usually more affectionate towards Lisa I feel she’s been hanging around with and getting ideas from a more talkative baby from another show…
