Got linked to a fun little Mac App called FluidTunes today, which is designed to turn your hand movements into a music controller for iTunes. The idea is simple enough- it turns on your iSight (which is conveniently placed on a my MacBook Pro for this kind of thing, and then picks up movements over different areas of the screen. It brings up a low-transparency image of whatever is going through the camera and then superimposes a Coverflow interface of your songs on top. It’s simply a list of songs in alphabetical order from your iTunes Library, but it is smart enough to know what song you’ve currently got playing, or else it’ll go back to the song previously selected. You might just be able to make out my face (more obvious) and my hand on the right (less obvious) as I play with it.
Most fun to play with, and very nicely polished. Everything from going to the correct song on startup, to having sparkle effects as you select buttons or wave your hand across is well thought out and definitely Mac-ish. You’re also able to go full screen for that bit of extra screen space. It’s a bit dark in front of my desk so my light is probably skewing the sensitivity somewhat, but even so the buttons are very responsive, activating on anything from waving your hand across or simply holding it in place and making a fist or moving your fingers.. You’re also able to wave your hand as shown in the Demo Video across the covers (which are, incidentally individual songs) to quickly flick through the songs- this worked pretty well considering the lighting, eventually worked out that two fingers moving across seemed to work the best for my position in front of the desk. I’m sure in lighter conditions it’ll work fine.
It’d be neat to have this as an iTunes Visualisation preset rather than a separate app, but either way it’s definitely worth a free 1mb (ish) download.
