Twitter Spam Prevention

Blogging at work, and I’m definitely on my lunch as I write this. Yep.

The Fail Whale team recently put a up a very enlightening post on their blog on spam- their most recent addition to the site is to add a 2000 watchlist limit. I feel this is a good thing, I’ve been added by spammers a number of times and while I can easily block them, like any other social networking site they can start up new accounts. Anyway this will hopefully cut down the spam by a margin, although some people have been complaining about this limit. They mentioned Obama’s 50k watch list, and I’d also make reference to things like the 10 Downing Street account as well. I watched them and barely a few minutes later they had watched me back. Scary.

I watch 53 other accounts, which range from IRL people mostly from University, friends and colleagues on deviantART, various webcomic artists (for random bits of art and banter) to App updates feed like those for Twitterific giving me news on their updates inbetween major updates on their blogs. Highly useful, but that’s still only 53 users. I wouldn’t really want any more than that, especially in Twitterific on both my Mac and my iPhone. It’d get way too crowded to actually look back and check over people’s replies without having to go to the site directly. Bleh. I’m all for this, now how’s about some decent servers, eh?
