Mamma Mia…here I go again

Mamma Mia!

…with another review, this time for the film Mamma Mia! which I saw a few days ago. All I can really say is, despite my initial misconceptions it was pretty enjoyable. =P I’m pretty aquainted with Abba songs and it seems that the rest of the cinema was as well, I’m sure half the place was either singing along or humming to the music.

The film had a very theatrical musical feel to it, which worked well with the transfer from stage to screen. The location for filming was really quite amazing and the sets were pretty impressive as well, bringing a much more fantasy feel to it. The acting and singing were…mostly very good- the girls and backing singers sang very well, although I can’t say the same about the 3 possible fathers and the husband, Sky. Probably the funniest moment was when Pierce Brosnan broke into a solo on his own (think it was SOS but can’t remember offhand) which was probably not his best acting moment. Can’t say much for the other two either, Colin Firth’s accent gets in the way and although Stellen Skarsgard’s singing wasn’t quite as ear cringing his acting didn’t really suit the film.

I can’t bash it too much as well, I enjoyed it too much overall so all in all I’d highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys Abba songs or musicals in general. I can’t really compare it to anything else recent such as Hairspray, possibly Rent which I saw a few months ago on DVD but that was a completely different feel to the film. Mind some of my friends have seen Mamma Mia 3 times now, if that shows anything.
